Amy S Albert

Licensed as both a Marriage & Family Therapist and a Professional Clinical Counselor, I treat individuals and couples. I earned a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in art history and psychology and an MA in clinical psychology from California Southern University with highest honors.

My first years of practice were in community mental health, doing trauma-informed therapy with a wide range of individuals, couples, and families. I have intensive experience treating those struggling with severe mental illness, addiction, chronic homelessness, HIV, and previous incarceration. I’ve also worked within the Los Angeles Unified School District, offering psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and families. If therapeutic orientation were a neighborhood, you’d find me at the intersection of the study of relationships, trauma, and the science of emotions.

Before training to be a psychotherapist, I worked as a writer and magazine editor. What I realized along the way is that the thing I loved most about journalism was listening.

I’ve had longtime experience with contemporary psychoanalytic theory and technique. This was transformative and led me to pursue training so I could practice the modality that so greatly enriched me—and has been my very best teacher.

If you’re struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or grief, I can help you move forward in the way that you want. If you’re feeling disconnected from your partner, I can offer multiple tools for each of you to improve communication, intimacy, and conflict resolution. If you’re a member of the so-called sandwich generation, I can support you through the stress involved in caring at the same time for your own family and aging parents. If you’re grappling with life transitions linked to relationships, career, or aging, I can assist you in managing those shifts. My training includes guidance in the search for a meaningful career that’s a good fit for your values, interests, and temperament.

The study of psychology has been an enduring pursuit, so my education continues. Currently, I’m at the Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis, working toward national certification as a psychoanalyst. This post-graduate training is one of the most complete, extensive, and respected available for psychotherapists.

For the last few years, I and every colleague I know have been conducting sessions on phone and video. Many of us were doing this before COVID hit, but it’s now common practice. After conditions become less risky, you may prefer to continue therapy via telehealth for its sheer convenience. Not everyone is a good candidate for telehealth, though, so we’ll need to talk briefly before our initial appointment to make sure it’s right for you.
